What is visual accommodation?

One of the three events that brings the image into focus. Accommodation is the process of changing the shape of the lens and occurs as the lens becomes more spherical, allowing for the refraction of light needed to focus the light rays on the retina.

What is another word for farsightedness?

Hyperopia: ability to see distant but not close objects. Caused when cornea is too flat or lens has too little refractive power relative to length of the eye. (Lens not bending enough)

What's another word for nearsightedness?

Myopia: ability to see close but not distant objects. Caused when refractive power of cornea and lens is too great relative to length of the eye. (Lens is over bending)

What is an astigmatism?

Cornea or lens is not uniformly curved, so image is not sharply focused.

What is color blindness?

Complete or partial absence or perception of one or more colors. (More frequent in males)

What is a cataract?

Clouding of lens as a result of advancing age, infection or trauma. (Moat common cause of blindness in the world)

What is glaucoma?

Excessive pressure buildup in aqueous humor. May destroy retina or optic nerve, resulting in blindness.

What is visual acuity?

One of the functions of cone cells, the eyes ability to focus an image on the retina so that a clear image is perceived. (20/20)

What is tinnitus?

Awareness of phantom sound sensations in the ears or head which is not from an external source. (Hiss, whistle, whirr, ring, or buzz)

What is otitus media?

Also called an ear infection; inflammation of the inner, middle or outer ear. (Includes fever) (swimmer's ear)

What is motion sickness?

Nausea caused by motion. Caused when information to the brain from semicircular canals conflicts with information from eyes and position sensors in back and lower limbs.

(When vision and auditory signals dont agree)

What is diabetic retinopathy?

Involves optic nerve degeneration, cataracts, retinal detachment, often caused by blood vessel degeneration and hemorrhage.
