What is the purpose of the independent brake valve?

The independent brake valve consists of a portion used to apply and release the air brake on the locomotive independently of the train, and a portion for releasing the locomotive brake when the train brake is applied after an automatic brake application.

It is self lapping and therefore will apply the locomotive brake to a pressure between zero and maximum 310 KPA depending on the position of the handle.

What are the operating positions of the brake valve?

RELEASE - FULL APPLICATION.

What is the maximum brake cylinder pressure obtainable when fully applied?

310 kPa

What is the purpose of depressing the brake valve handle during normal running?

Depressing the independent brake valve handle in the RELEASE position will fully release an automatic brake application on the locomotive.

Depressing the handle in the APPLICATION ZONE will give a partial release proportionate to the position of the independent brake valve handle.

What is the purpose of the MU2A valve?

The MU2A valve is provided to isolate the independent brake valve in a cab where the brake valve is not in use or on a trailing unit which has the No3 control pipe and the No4 independent release pipe coupled to the leading loco.

How must the MU2A valve be manually operated to ensure its proper function?

The MU2A valve is manually operated and to change position, the handle must be first pressed in against the spring pressure and then turned until the desired position is reached.

After releasing the handle, it is important that it springs out and locks in position.

In what position must the MU2A valve be placed when the independent brake valve is in use?

When the valve is in the position marked LEAD or DEAD the independent brake valve is connected to No3 control pipe and No4 independent release pipe for the following purposes:

- To bring about an application of the loco brakes when using the independent brake valve by allowing main res air to flow from the brake valve via No3 control pipe and double check valve to the J1 relay valve

- To release the independent application on the loco by allowing air from No3 control pipe to pass to the independent brake valve where it will exhaust to atmosphere

- To release the loco brake while the automatic brake remains applied on the train, by depressing the independent brake valve handle, which allows the main res air to flow via the No4 independent release pipe, to the quick release portion of the control valve

Which position is used to isolate the independent brake valve from No3 control and No4 independent release pipes?

When it becomes necessary to isolate the independent brake valve and prevent its normal operation, the MU2A valve must be placed in the TRAIL 6–26 position.

While in this position communication is closed between the independent brake valve and No3 control and No4 independent release pipes.

Which position is not compatible with V/Line brake equipment and must not be used?

TRAIL 6–24–26 must not be used on the Vline trains.
