What are the six operating positions of the 26L automatic brake valve on the N class?

R M F S H E

1. release - 500kPa in BP normal running position - not braking

2. minimum reduction - reduces BP by 50kPa to slightly apply brakes = smoother application of brakes-BP=450kPa

3. full service - service application zone - normal application of train brakes - self lapping. BP is 350kPa (or 325kPa). Auxiliary res & brake cylinder are fully equalised.

4. suppression - not really used - Vigilance Control suppressed-does not operate.

5. handle off - handle is removed in this position - used for trailing loco OR for your rear cab - VC disabled

6. emergency - applies train brakes faster-emergency. BP reduced to 0 kPa. Train must be brought to a stop before resuming running.

What is the SA26 independent brake valve on the N class?

R F

Only brakes the loco. Use when stationary/slow movements/light engine. For stopping a moving train, use the automatic brake.

Two operating positions:

- release - brake cylinders have 0kPa - handle off in release position

- full application - 310kPa

What is the MU2A valve used for?

The MU2A valve is used to isolate the independent brake valve when it’s not in use.

It has two operating positions:

- lead or dead - cut in - brake on

- TRAIL 6-26 - cut out - brake off

What is the No3 control pipe used for?

The No3 control pipe connects the independent brake valve to to the brake racks on all locomotives in a multi-unit consist.

What is the No4 independent release pipe used for?

The brakes on all locomotives in the multi-unit consist may be released while the automatic (train) brake is applied by depressing the independent brake valve handle in the release position.
