What is the No. 4 brake equipment on a Y class?

Back (Definition)

What are the five, No. 4 Automatic Brake Valve Operating Positions on the Y class?

CR R L S E

1. charging & release - charge brake pipe with main reservoir air to release the train brakes quickly after an application. Don’t leave in this position (it will end up at main res 750-850 pressure), only use this position to assist a quick release of the brakes after an application.

2. running - the normal position to have the brake valve (lever) in when they’re not being applied. This maintains brake pipe pressure at 500kPa.

3. lap - holds brake pipe pressure steady after application is made

4. service - this is brake application position-allows BP pressure to be reduced for application of brakes

5. emergency - applies train brakes at faster rate

What are the four W type self lapping brake valve positions -independent brake - Y class loco only?

R A F E

1. release - normal position, brake not applied

2. application zone - increases and decreased BP pressure to apply/release brakes-self lapping ensures brake cylinder pressure is maintained

3. full application - full brake cylinder pressure 310kPa

4. emergency - higher brake cylinder pressure than full application
