Part A: Plan Of Investigation:
This historical investigation will assess the role that the consequences of a war of attrition and trench warfare played on the terms drafted by the Allies within the Treaty of Versailles, by answering the question, “To what extent did the labours of trench warfare and the subsequent war of attrition lead to the decision made against Germany at the Paris Peace Conference by the Big Three?” The political and economic effect of the war on the different Allied nations led to different intentions at the Conference. To evaluate the opposing goals of nations at the conference, the contrasting views of Woodrow Wilson’s Fourteen Points and the goals of David Lloyd George and Georges Clemenceau at the Conference will

George’s most notable opinions were as follows: o Fearing an uprising of left wing extremism similar to that of Russia’s o Britain stood to gain much more if Germany was blamed for the war
• Geroges Clemenceau, the French Prime Minister, had opinions on how to deal with Germany which were far more severe, if not extreme: o Wanted “excessive reparations” o Wanted Rhineland/Saar valley, Alsace-Lorraine o “Bring Germany to her knees”
Terms of the Treaty:
• Terms imposed on Germany: o War Guilt Clause o Germany had to pay £6,000,000, lost Rhineland and Alsace-Lorraine o Limited the army to seven divisions of infantry and three cavalry divisions, with limited armaments, machine guns, and tanks o Germany was to dismember its air force within two months of the date of the Treaty o “The Allied and Associated Governments affirm and Germany accepts the responsibility of Germany and her allies for causing all the loss and damage to which the Allied and Associated Governments and their nationals have been subjected as a consequence of the war imposed upon them by the aggression of Germany and her allies. ”
