In the beginning of the play, Macbeth demonstrates that he has an authoritative status and redeeming qualities by defeating the Norwegians. Macbeth is viewed as heroic and has many noble qualities shown in battle. He defeats the traitors, the Norwegians, which helps restore the order of Scotland. He is recognized as a brave and loyal leader. In the military camp, the captain tells King Duncan about Macbeth’s victorious conquest. It is clear Macbeth is losing his mind when his mind begins to play tricks on him. In Macbeth’s castle, Macbeth is telling Lady Macbeth about the voices in his head. Macbeth explains, “Still [the voices] cried ‘sleep no more!’ to all the house: / ‘Glamis hath murdered sleep, and therefore Cawdor / Shall sleep no more: Macbeth shall sleep no more!’” (2.2.40-42). After Duncan’s death, the voices blame Macbeth that he “shall sleep no more” representing his own guilt and madness. No matter what he tries, Macbeth would be incapable to find peace again. The voices symbolize a situation he cannot control because he is delusional and on the edge of insanity. After Lady Macbeth leaves to hide the murder weapon, Macbeth conscience causes him to wonder, “Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash [the] blood / Clean from [his] hand?
