The behavior therapist is likely to work with a client in identifying therapeutic goals through several means. Identifying therapeutic goals is one of his top priorities because only then can he truly go to work to help his client. He has his purpose in mind: to work through a systematic process to help his client to the best of his ability. After identifying therapeutic goals, the behavior therapist considers the techniques he wants to use. He knows he has several to choose from and with confidence can choose the most appropriate for his client’s situation. He knows his work stems from empirically measured techniques and from evidence-based practices. The behavior therapist can be creative as he tailors his interventions for the individual needs of his client, or he can use some existing techniques within his treatment plan such as applied behavioral analysis, relaxation training, systematic desensitization, exposure therapies, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, social skills training, self-modification programs and self-directed behavior, multimodal therapy, and mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches.
