Children would rather spend their leisure time at home watching television or playing console games instead of running around outside. With the advancement of the internet and mobile phones, children do not even have to leave the comfort of their room to talk to friends (Hills, King, & Armstrong, 2007). Habits formed in childhood often carry over into adulthood. Because of this, it is imperative that children establish healthy physical activity habits at a young age so that they can continue them when they get older.
With that information as a backdrop, the question remains: why is physical activity important in the schoolage years and how does it affect overall development? The purpose of this paper is to discuss physical activity in the middle childhood years and the impact on the development of school-age children. What is Physical Activity? Most people think that physical activity means structured moving. However, physical activity can come in the form of play, sports, games, and other planned and unplanned active recreation. It does not have to be structured or formal to be beneficial.
