In the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth 's ' characters develop for better and for worse. First, the murder of Duncan shows their true beginning personalities. Macbeth is benevolent and feels sympathy, however Lady Macbeth insensitive.
Next, during Banquo 's murder, their characteristics begin to shift. Macbeth becomes slightly more harsh and Lady Macbeth softens up briefly. Finally, during the third murder of Macduff 's family, the full transformation between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth occurs. Macbeth is completely ruthless, while Lady Macbeth warmhearted and humane. Throughout each of the murders in the play Lady Macbeth 's remorse accumulates while Macbeth 's remorse declines affecting their personality.

Macbeth is a compassionate and caring leader, but Lady Macbeth is apathetic and numb. Lady Macbeth plans to kill the King because she wants the witches’ prophecy for Macbeth’s role as king to be unquestionable. Macbeth feels guilty about committing a murder and does not want to go through with Lady Macbeth’s plan. After Malcolm becomes prince of Cumberland, Macbeth starts to feel the pressure.
