According to a poll conducted by Forum Research in June 2016, 72% of the 2,271 Canadians they surveyed are in favour of assisted death in Canada. Like many of these Canadians, I also believe that each of us should have the right to end our lives in our own terms. For one, medically-assisted dying gives people the “ability to make other arrangements to allow themselves to spend their final days in a more comfortable and personal setting.” Second, euthanasia can help shorten the grief of the patient’s loved ones. Not only that, assisted dying also unloads some of the financial burden their families might undergo after the patient dies.…

The image of “compassionate healers,” which doctors throughout generations have painstakingly forged, will be forever smudged as “death-bringers.” The maleficent intentions of a few “doctors” will stain the reputation of each and every physician. How are we supposed to entrust ourselves or our loved ones to the care of a physician who we know performs assisted suicide? The reason why medicine is held in the highest esteem by our society is because it has steadfastly stood by the Hippocratic Oath---“primum non nocere,” first do no harm. It works mutually: it reinforces the doctor’s commitment to beneficence and at the same time the patient’s sense of assurance.…

There are many issues regarding the legalization of assisted suicide. Medical doctors are trained and trusted to save lives, not take them, that leads many to question all doctors if so many are willing to assist in ending the lives of their patients. Medical doctors are sworn in using the Hippocratic Oath in which they promise to save lives to the best of their abilities. If we question the act of physician-assisted suicide it is legally and morally unethical. For example, if an individual is determined to take their life and a friend hands them a gun instructing them to kill themselves, the person giving them the means to carry out the act is just as responsible as the individual committing the act itself.…

There has been instability with the assisted suicide topic because the situation has been left unsettled. But, to imagine if the law universally legalized assisted death permanently is to think there is a possible solution to quiet down the questioning. Doctor assisted suicide is a huge controversy around the world. Only five countries and five states explicitly allow for doctor assisted suicide to go completely unpunished. Doctor assisted suicide is suicide by the patient with medication or information provided by a doctor who has knowledge of the patient’s intent. This is different from euthanasia because the doctor is not actually performing the act, just providing the means and knowledge to do so. There are many arguments for and against doctor assisted suicide that use rhetorical appeals to further their argument.…

“A patient’s request for euthanasia entails a complex process that demands emotional work by all participants. It is characterized by an intensive period of sharing information, relationship building and negotiation in order to reach agreement. We hypothesize that making decisions about euthanasia demands a proactive approach towards participants’ preferences and values regarding end of life, towards the needs of relatives, towards the burden placed on physicians and a careful attention to shared decision-making” (Dees Marianne). The idea of this method is not to favor everyone and grant their wish on ending their life, but this process will be made based on the information they gathered from the family, and seeking another consultation and opinion from other physician about the illness. Patient’s request of ending their life must go through a deep research and analysis if there is no other solution for their…
