When he arrived at the coffee shop he was hot and sweaty, panting from his fast walk, almost run. He glanced around the café and saw her sat in a booth, the booth they had sat in on their first date. He crossed the room quickly, dodging through other customers and pulling of his jacket. As soon as he slipped into the both, he asked, “What’s wrong?” Ella looked up at him as though she was shocked he had gotten there so fast. She was nursing a cup of coffee in front of her as though her hands were cold even though it was the middle of summer. “Anthony, we need to talk.” She looked down at the brown liquid in her cup as though she couldn’t bring herself to look at him. Oh no, he thought, I hate those words. “What’s wrong?” he asked again, “Have I done something to upset you?” Ella quickly shook her head. She finally looked up at him. Her eyes were watery and red as though she had been crying. Anthony instantly wanted to take her in his arms and hold her tightly until she felt better. He clutched his hands in front of him to stop himself from doing so. “No, you haven’t done anything wrong,” she replied, “I have.” I don’t like where this is going, he thought not for the first time. His heart was pounding. He didn’t like the way she was drawing this out, like she wanted to torment him and hurt him even more than she needed to.
