According to dictionary.com the American Dream means ¨the ideals of freedom, equality,and opportunity traditionally held to be available to every American.¨ In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the negative aspects of the American Dream are portrayed by the Valley of Ashes which is an illusion of hell, created by modern society. The valley of ashes represents desolation and death, a spiritual emptiness experienced by many people. Three symbols that are represented in the novel that reveal a deeper meaning of the American Dreams are Valley of Ashes, Tom`s brutality, and the rotten crowd.
