Good morning. A society and the individual must work cooperatively in order to maintain balance and control. But the society’s ideas can impact on an individual, either beneficially or harmfully. “To Kill a Mockingbird” elucidates this idea through the unprogressive attitude towards the acceptance of Negroes. Through the asyndeton and hyperbolised rumour that “according to Miss Stephanie, boo was sitting in the living room cutting some items from the Maycomb Tribune to paste in his scrapbook. His father entered the room. As Mr Radley passes by, Boo drove the scissors into his parent’s leg, pulled them out, wiped them on his pants, and resumed his activities.” The lack of progression causes Maycomb to create a bad image of people who are different. The further dehumanisation of Boo is highlighted through the simile when “Stephanie Crawford said she woke up in the middle of the night one time and saw him looking straight through the window at her… said his head was like a skull looking at her.” The insufficiency of progress has led to the mistreatment of characters who are …show more content…
Their inability to escape the maze or cure people who have been harmed leads to the punishment of individuals. After 3 years of coexisting with the grievers, “now (Thomas) has killed one of them. Who knows what that could mean for (them)? He has to be punished.” The high modality and rhetorical question show that although the rules have been broken, progress has been made but they decide on punishing Thomas anyway. “It’s called the changing. It’s what happens when someone gets stung. We haven’t been able to get a clear word out of ben since it happened. And it’s only going to get worse.” The neologism and close up shot heighten the idea that they cannot cure an illness so they decide to kill him instead. The society’s inability to find a way out of a situation has resulted in the mistreatment of particular
