Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 in Shadwell Virginia. His parents were Mr. Peter Jefferson and Mrs. Jane Randolph. He was a member of a very wealthy and distinguished family. At the age of twenty-six Jefferson began building Monticello on a large area of land inherited from his father. Monticello remained his home throughout his life and was always expanding and maintaining the house. Only three years later he married Martha Wayles Skelton with whom he had six children, only two of which lived to be an adult. They lived happily together for ten years until her death. Jefferson attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg at the age of sixteen. He graduated after two years with the highest honors. He practice law and served in many different political positions throughout his life that will be covered later in this essay. At the age of seventy-six Jefferson founded the University of Virginia and planned its curriculum. Thomas Jefferson died at age eighty-three on July 5, 1826, the fifteenth anniversary of the Declaration of Independance. Jefferson's wish for his tombstone was that it reflected what he gave the people, not what they gave him and that's exactly what he got. His beliefs were unorthodocs and quite odd. Jefferson once said in a letter to Ezra Stiles Ely, “I am a sect by myself, as far as I know.” This quote shows just how unique his beliefs were. Thomas Jefferson was a deist who professed “Christianity,” which is the belief in the morals taught by Jesus. He believed that there was a rational and compassionate God ang that that was evident in the beauty and order of the universe However he rejected Jesus’s divinity, resurrection, and biblical miracles. Jefferson had meticulously cut up four Bibles and left out any passages he didn't believe or agree with including miracles and any mention of Jesus being divine, This became known as the Jefferson Bible. Jefferson’s beliefs brought controversy when he stated that there should be the separation of church and state which has now become a part of modern America. He did not however only spend his time on religion, he used most of his time filling his many political
