The definition of culture by LiveScience is, “The characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, Defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. To go even further it can be known as shared patterns of behaviors and interactions, cognitive constructs and understanding that is learned by socialization. Thus, it can be seen as the growth of a group identity fostered by social patterns unique to the group.” Infringing on the rights of a human beings culture violates the very essence of what they are. It is an extremely arrogant and low blow to a way of life. You could even say a people stripped of its culture is a people stripped of its soul. The idea of one way of life being supreme is prejudiced and absurdly racist. The novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe is a well written implication of this. In Things Fall Apart we see what Okonkwo does in retaliation to the forceful attainment of his land and people by the white missionaries. Elliott Trevor was correct when he said “Okonkwo took his own life rather than to submit to their truth; instead of forsaking his heritage, life, spirituality, belief, and culture.
