Does your past define you and shape you into the person you are today? That is an important question to ask about someone who is suffering from amnesia or memory loss. Sasha, in Stefan Komandarev’s film The World is Big and Salvation Lurks Just Around the Corner, experiences memory loss after his family 's big car crash in the beginning of the film. He can’t remember a single thing about himself before the crash and can’t remember who anyone is. So if our past experiences shape us into the person we are today do people who suffer from amnesia or memory loss have an identity. Sasha did not have an easy childhood and was affected by trauma at an early age. What he faced, in most countries people will never have to experience. However, millions of people around the world face this and especially in Syria today. Sasha had to leave his home and grandparents behind at a very young age. Many people will not be refugees and live in a refugee camp that only serves spaghetti for every meal of the day. Having to leave everything that you have ever known can be a very traumatic experience. Not only did Sasha have to leave everyone behind, but the film starts with Sasha and his parents getting into a car accident. Sasha is a young adult and faces the unimaginable tragedy of losing both his parents. However, after the car crash he doesn’t remember any of this. His parents and him being a refugee were such a huge part of his life and how he got to Germany in the first place. Not…
