Sometimes in relationships people become lost. Every individual in these types relationships can be compared to caged animals who sort of lose their wild side. In modern times women can get out of whatever relationships- like marriage- as they please. In 1889, there was no leaving your marriage. When you have a person wrapped around your finger you control them both directly and indirectly. In this case, the roles are reversed instead of Edna running the manipulation game Robert Lebrun is the one running the game. Now in the beginning of the book, Robert lays his head on her arm “unconsciously” and Edna pushes it off. At this point, Robert begins his manipulation game. “Good-by, my dear Mrs. Pontellier; good-by. You won’t- I hope you won’t completely forget me.” She clung to his hand, striving to detain him.” (Chopin. 47) Robert had made up his mind on going to Mexico he just didn’t tell Edna to see her reaction due to the fact that he had been told by Madame Ratignolle that Edna would never take him seriously. He’s playing this game so well in order to add to the anticipation and that longing feeling he says I hope you won’t completely forget me. No man says that unless they want to pull at the strings of your heart every which way. As soon as Robert says this she immediately begins to beg Robert to stay. Roberts has been playing this game so well that Edna broke out of her character to beg a man who is not her husband to stay. To top it all off Robert doesn’t call her Edna during this whole interaction but address her as Mrs. Pontellier as a means to remind her you're not mine your married. As Edna is begging this man to stay she takes the form of a child because in a way she’s seeking the attention from Robert. It’s almost as if she’s dependent on that attention that Robert gives her like a mother does to her children. “if Mrs. Pontellier should call upon you, play for her that impromptu of Chopin's my favorite…I should like to know how it affects her.” (Chopin.63) Even though Edna told Robert to write to her and he said he would he doesn’t. instead, he writes to Mademoiselle Reisz and talks about Edna from top to bottom somehow
