The smallest butterfly is almost invisible to the eye at barely 1/8 of an inch long. The largest butterfly is the size of a plate you would eat dinner on, as large as 12 inches. Many people think that butterflies are color blind that is not the case. Butterflies can see a limited colors – mainly yellow, green and red. Further, they can see a band of color that even humans can’t even see, and their eyes reveal a nearly 360 degree view of the world around them. Butterfly eyes are composed of thousands of tiny eyes called ommatidia. The paragraphs to come we will talk about what a butterfly is, there diet and habitat, different types of butterflies, and each one of there life cycle: The egg, Caterpillar, Pupa, Adult. Butterflies are beautiful, flying insects with large scaly wings. Like all insects, they have six jointed legs, 3 body parts, a pair of antennae, compound eyes, and an exoskeleton. The three body parts are the head, thorax (chest), and abdomen (tail end). The butterfly 's body is covered by sensory hairs. Four wings and the six legs of the butterfly are attached to the thorax. The thorax contains the muscles that make the legs and wings move. Butterflies are part of insects Lepidoptera class.Lepidos is Greek for "scales" and ptera means "wing". A butterflies scientific name is Rhopalocera.
