The Similarities Between Macbeth And Pleasantville

Throughout the reading of Macbeth, I have made several connections to greed from the schema I have constructed throughout the year. For example, Pleasantville, a film about two people who happen to end up in an alternative world where it's technically "perfect," their influence to other people caused them to live in a liberal society triggering an epidemic of colour representing freedom and individual thoughts. On the other hand, the mayor was against this, plus he wanted to do anything in his power to prevent it. To this end, he was afraid of change just like when Macbeth was afraid of being replaced by a different bloodline in the future. What does petty high school drama have to do with Shakespeare’s Macbeth? At first, the two may seem like polar opposites, as high school drama entails teenagers backstabbing each other with words and trivial actions and Macbeth involves literal stabbing. However, under the surface, the two are more similar than they seem. Macbeth’s attempts to gain power through terror are as futile as a high school student’s attempts to gain popularity by sabotaging his or her best friends. The constant shifts of loyalty in Macbeth are the same shifts of loyalty that happen between high school friend groups.…

The most effective aspects of the play were the music and costumes worn by the actors. The music helped to set the mood of the play. For example, when the two witches entered there was a drum that was used and when they talked long metal tube was played that sounded rather eerie and mysterious, much like the witches. Their costumes also helped me to understand the play better. They were wearing all black with mesh covering the faces to help conceal their identity, which was rather vague in the original play.…

Some people during this time that were seen as greedy would often give back to the community what they had taken away from it after they had passed. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, the character Lady Macbeth does not conform to the gender expectations of her time. Her nonconformity is shown through the actions she takes—rebelling against the common notion of feminity by inciting violence—to ensure her husband's, Macbeth's, place as king. The character Lady Macduff serves as a foil to Lady Macbeth and displays how women are expected to behave. Because it seems that Lady Macduff is put forth as an example of the ideal woman, it is expected that she would meet a fate different than Lady Macbeth's, however, both women die by the end of the play. Even though both women die, Lady Macduff's life is sacrificed for the greater good, (halting Macbeth's ruination of the kingdom) and therefore, more honorable than Lady Macbeth's.…
