In the short story Sonny’s Blues, by James Baldwin and short story The Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, by Ambrose Bierce, the narrators included related events throughout the short stories. For instance the protagonists, Sonny and Farquhar, both dealt with family affairs and getting punished due to their past actions. However, the two short stories, both share similar, yet different symbols that connected to the protagonists, the theme of not everyone gets a second chance, which includes a style of foreshadowing and flashbacks. In light of Baldwin, symbolism got implied to the good and the bad. For example, the narrator described a trembling cup, highlighting the difficult position Sonny is placed in. By which, in the bible the trembling cup symbolizes suffering and fear that has haunted people. “He sipped from it and looked toward me, and nodded.” (Baldwin 118) With this in mind, Sonny drunk from the trembling cup meaning due to all his suffering, he will get an opportunity of redemption and to be at peace again with the narrator. Whereas Bierce, uses “A piece of dancing driftwood” (Baldwin 552) floating down the river to represent a chance for freedom. At this point Farquhar’s imagination kicks in and he starts to imagine a way to escape in the water. Then, he comes back to reality emphasizing “How slowly it appeared to move…a sluggish stream” (Baldwin 552) Given these point, both of the narrators created symbols that impacted the protagonists, by allowing them to…
