On February 2nd of 1848, the war between Mexico and America came to an end at the city of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The war lasted for 2 years. Mexico and America was fighting for the land of California and New Mexico and who would receive it. In 1844, Democrat James Polk won the election and became president. During his presidency he pushed to add Texas to the union. It was added in 1845 and during this time southerners pushed to also add California and New Mexico. This was an act passed by the United States congress and was directed for the US. When the act was passed the southerners extremely happy because they had promoted the idea of it and wanted it to be passed. In 1853, Franklin Pierce became president and planned to enforce the law. It ordered people to return any fugitive slaves they had seen. Which meant any runaway slaves that you catch must be returned to the owner. People took this law very seriously and it became crucial for people to follow it. It was so important that if you were caught helping or simply letting a slave go then your punishments could be severe. You could be fined or thrown in jail at the least and this made the North very angry. But the book Uncle Tom’s Cabin along with Franklin Pierce 's plan made the resistance of slavery grow. In 1854, the slavery dispute would erupt. This was very important to the US because it became a very important act to follow was a law required throughout the US. Harriet Beecher Stowe has witnessed many things that persuaded her to find a way to help slavery. And, she was determined to help put an end to slavery in the United States. In her book she included events that she had witnessed relating to slavery. It included dramatic events and vivid characters. Stowe made sure to show slavery as a very brutal system in the book. After, being published her book was instantly a success. She sold over 300,000 copies in the first year. Although, the book was a hit the book was banned in the south. While. many people loved the book people such as slaveholders did not. She did very much research over the slavery in the south and was very determined to help. Many people were very emotional about the book including Abraham Lincoln that stated “So you’re the little woman that wrote the book that started this big war.” She continued to fight against slavery and even after the Civil war she still worked hard. She began public speaking, continued to write, and read her book aloud to many audiences. Her book was so successful that even after she died people still remembered her and how big of an impact she made on the idea of slavery. Uncle Tom 's’ Cabin made a huge impact on slavery by changing many people 's perspectives and creating one of the biggest wars the United states has been a part of. It helped shape the people 's minds to what they want to believe in
