In the novel The Lord of the Flies, William Goulding refers to social prejudices such as judging based on appearance and the effect of one’s class and how people view them. One example is when the boy’s first get to the island there was an election, and it’s basically just between jack and Ralph, because they fit the description of a leader. Piggy on the other hand, has the brains not the bronze, he’s not the best looking; he has glasses, he’s over weight, and he has asthma. Although none of these things affect his ability to lead, they still put it against him and choose based on this. The boys didn’t really listen to piggy due to his appearance and lack of confidence Every time he had something to say, the boys would shoot down his ideas. Due to the inability to get his ideas out himself, he has to speak through Ralph. At one point Piggy offers up an idea, and the group won’t listen, but soon after Ralph says basically the same thing and their all ears. The little uns is another example of social prejudices the little uns represent the lower class of society, and they aren’t realty heard. The big uns are in charge, and they expect the little uns to help with no benefit to them. They want the little uns to do their part, but then when it comes to decision making, they have no part.
