“There is only one sin, only one. And that is theft [...] when you tell a lie, you steal someone’s right to the truth” (17-18). In Khaled Hosseini’s novel, The Kite Runner, Amir was a character who had committed this sin. Soon after Amir won his first kite tournament, he witnessed something that traumatized both him and a close friend. Amir, like many other characters, could not stand up for himself, which created problems for his future relationships with his friends and family. His cowardly nature caused him to lie out of fear but also jealousy. Baba never gave his full attention to Amir because Amir was nothing like him. Baba loved soccer and fighting, but Amir loved books and poems. He thought that Amir wasn’t manly enough so he adored others who were tough and able to stand up for themselves. This caused Amir to be insecure and jealous of anyone who Baba compared him to, especially his friend Hassan. Amir grew up with Hassan and they were like brothers, but when Amir’s jealousy took over him he only saw Hassan as a servant. He tried his best to get rid of Hassan in every way possible because he hated how Baba loved him the most. At one point, Amir and Hassan teamed up together and competed in a kite flying tournament. After Amir won the tournament, he told Hassan to find the blue kite because they earned it. He was worried after a while because Hassan was gone for a long time. Amir then searched for Hassan himself and found him in a dark alleyway, surrounded by bullies. He watched Hassan from a distance and saw him get beaten and raped. The Kite Runner, a novel by Khaled Hosseini, mainly focused on his mistake of lying about Hassan in order to show how Amir developed as a character. His jealousy and cowardly nature made up most of his character which played a role in each action he made. Without living up to his father’s expectations, he wouldn’t have dealt with the guilt that piled onto him for years after hurting Hassan. However, he did grow as a character who took actions to redeem himself for his mistakes. Although Amir finally took action for his mistakes, he only did it after learning that Hassan was his half brother. If Rahim Khan never called Amir, would he have ever done the same
