In an attempt to preserve these oral German tales, saving them from extinction in 1806 the brothers collected stories from middle classed house wives, friends and even peasants and transferred them to written text. The brothers did not stop there they later went on to release a second volume in 1815 and a second edition in 1819, the second edition contained edited version of stories they already wrote in the first two volumes of their collection.. Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm did more then just rewriting stories, as philologists and professors they also wrote about medieval studies and mythology. Although not completed the brothers did start work on a German dictionary but unfortunately were only able to make it to the letter F before they both died. Wilhelm died on December 1859 followed by Jakob in September 1863, the brothers left behind a total of seven editions to their collection of fairy tales and other text such as their unfinished German language
