The Declaration of Independence states that the government should protect unalienable rights. How is life protected in prison when they literally take it away? In what way is liberty protected when they lock someone up twenty-four hours, twenty-three if you are lucky enough, a day for the rest of your life? Last but not least, Pursuit of Happiness.
The United States is known for being the land of the free, yet it has the largest incarceration rate than any other country. They have to live with the regret of their wrong doings. Why should they? Why should criminals live with that if they did not commit a violent crime? The inmates have to adjust to the schedule in prison, eating three meals a day, and tough rules they have to follow. One vast adjustment the inmates have to regulate is live without their family and friends. Family includes wife, husband, sister, brother, mother, father, grandfather, and grandmother. Some have to leave their kids behind in foster care because they have no one to take care of them. The friends of inmates forget about them. They miss many important and sad events in their life. Example, they miss birthdays, funerals, graduations, weddings, anniversaries and welcoming of newborns. The inmates will be victims, witnesses or the convict of fights, stabbings, raping, and killings inside the
