Body Reflection Paper Conclusion

When I heard that we were doing a body composition lab I had no idea what I was in for, all I thought I would learn that day was something I already knew, that I was out of shape. But I left with some pretty impactful knowledge that helped open my eyes to exactly where I stood when it came to my overall health. In one book I read the author Mary Grosvenor defines body composition as, “the relative portions of fat and lean tissue that make up the body, affect[ing] the risks associated with excess body weight.” We measured body composition three ways, the skin fold caliper test, waist to hip ratio, and BMI. We were also required to write down our family’s health history.
The very first station I went to was the skin-fold caliper in which my results were 20 mm triceps, 30 mm iliac crest, and 31 mm thigh, for a total of 81mm. With 30.1% of body fat I am classified as having a marginal health risk (Corbin, 306). An average level of body fat for a young women is between 21-32% of their total weight (Grosvenor, 313). If I were to go over 32% I would have increased health risks. Next I measured my waist to hip ratio which was .72 which means I have a lower health risk of obesity than those who have 0.8 and higher (Corbin, 312). My waist circumference was 28.5 inches, and my hip was 39.5 inches. These facts show that my body resembles a pear shape. Due to this my body carries more fat around the hips than the abdominal area. I had never even given my family’s health history a second thought. However, after completing this lab my eyes have become open to exactly where I stand in terms of health and fitness, and to what disease and conditions I have a greater risk of obtaining.
