As well as in the book, where he was forced to work in a warehouse he didn’t want to work in, he had to do it to support his mom that did not work and his sister Laura that had a long list of issues. As an example, he complains about his job at the warehouse, yelling at his mom: “You think I'm crazy about the warehouse? You think I’m in love with the continental shoe makers? You think I want fifty years down there…” Page 23, Scene 3 of The Glass Menagerie. Amanda was trying to make him see the importance of his work at the warehouse as he was the only one making money to support the family, telling him how this job gave them financial stability. Like Williams, he didn’t take the job seriously and was going to the movies every time he got to escape from reality. Tennessee’s mom was always controlling and wanted to have everything her way. Basically because she regretted the choice she made when marrying Williams’s father, so she felted the need to meticulously dictate her children’s life so the outcome wouldn’t be the same. She never got over the fact that she made a wrong choice and deep down wouldn’t forgive herself, she would always talk about all the gentleman callers she had and how her life would have gone different if she made a more thought-of choice. Sadly, she didn’t think of educating herself so she wouldn’t have to depend in a man and tolerate his abuse but realistically that’s not her fault since she was raised in sexist misogynist values, but that’s a topic to talk about another time. So. back to Tennessee’s mom obsession to control everything, it had Tom wanting to leave home really bad: “Honey don’t eat with your fingers, Eat food leisurely. Tom: I haven’t enjoyed one bit of this meal because of your constant directions, sickening all this discussion….Amanda: You smoke too much… You are not excused of the table” scene I, page 6 and 7.
