Maria Antonia Josepha Joanna (Marie Antoinette) was born on November 2, 1755 in Vienna, Austria. She was the fifteenth child of the Holy Roman Emperor, Francis I, and the powerful Hapsburg empress, Maria Theresa. In order to cement the newly established alliance between the French and Hapsburg thrones, Maria Theresa promised her daughter’s hand in marriage to the future king of France, Louis XVI. Four years later, the fifteen year old girl set off to Vienna to marry someone she had never met, and become queen of France at its most vulnerable time in history.
