Fortunato’s Demise
The short story “The Cask of Amontillado”, By Edgar Allen Poe is a tale that takes place somewhere in Italy within the 18th century; this is understood because the use of the term “roquelaire”. Poe located this shorty story in Italy and set the time back further within the 18th century, both of these variables that the author has provided to the story are associated with the gothic genre. Now, taking into consideration the goal of Montresor and the events that ended the tale, this piece of Poe’s is also considered a horror story, with which Edgar Allen Poe is quite popular for; however, his work often projects great moral values (Mcdaniels). In this short story, there is a lot of evil in the personality of the two main characters; Montresor is guilty of vengeance, trickery, and even premeditated murder, while Fortunato is responsible for being egotistical and arrogant. Each character has a part in the end result of this short story, the qualities that these men project, act ultimately as the reasons to why Fortunato is murdered and compasses the reader to a respectful moral value. “The Cask of Amontillado” provides its’ readers with the moral value, arrogance and being egotistical is destructive to one’s self; which is exactly what lead to Fortunato’s demise. “The Cask of Amontillado” focuses on two men, who are both wine fanatics.
