On August 6th and August 9th 1945, the whole world would change forever when the United States dropped the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. These nuclear weapons affected the earth 's environment. It also negatively affected people 's health around the world. In addition it significantly affected how dangerous the Cold War could have been. How did President Truman 's decision to drop nuclear weapons impact the world going forward?

In late 1941, the United States government started to try and create an atomic bomb and called this attempt The Manhattan Project. This project started off small at first only involving research at 3 universities: Columbia University, the University of Chicago and the University of California at Berkeley. A breakthrough occurred in December 1942 when Enrico Fermi, an Italian physicist, led a group of scientists to create the first controlled nuclear chain reaction under the grandstands of Stagg Field at the University of Chicago. After the final bill was equated, nearly $2 billion had been spent on research and development of the nuclear weapon. The Manhattan Project gave work to over 120,000 Americans people. On July 16, 1945, an extraordinary flash that could be seen from around 200 miles ignited up the morning sky.
