BOOK ASSIGNMENT 1: HEDONISM 2
Happiness can be found through things that have intrinsic value and instrumental value.
Things have intrinsic value when they are good in its own right even if it is self-contained and does not bring anything out (Shafer-Landau, 2015). An example of something that is intrinsically valuable would be love and happiness. According to Shafer-Landau (2015) “A good life is going to contain a lot of what is intrinsically valuable” (pg.23). What this means is that things that have instrumental value are going to be the tools that help you achieve intrinsic value depending on the valuer such as money, food and clothing.
One thing that has intrinsic value is happiness. Shafer-Landau (2015) defines hedonism as “The view that pleasure is the only thing that is intrinsically valuable, and pain (or unhappiness) is the only thing intrinsically bad” (G-4). This means that the goal of hedonism is trying to obtain happiness in your life. The goal of hedonism is the same, however the way people obtain it varies from person to person. The reason it varies is because everyone has a different sense of what makes them happy. How prone you are to obtain happiness matters as well depending on the type of culture you grew up in. For example, if you are in a more individualistic society there was a stronger relationship to finding happiness than if you were part of a more collective society because the individualistic society emphasizes more autonomy and pursuing what you want to individually pursue (Joshanloo, 2016).
