Schizophrenia Medications In schizophrenia, the study has shown that the antipsychotic medications are effective in the treatment of acute psychosis as well the reduction of the risks involved in the future episodes of psychosis (Fuller et al., 2015). As the most common type of medications of schizophrenia, antipsychotic medications helps in controlling symptoms through affecting brain neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine (Kisch, 2008). In situations where someone is resistant to taking medication, injections are prescribed instead of pills. Sometimes victims are agitated, leading to the use of benzodiazepine such as Ativan in combination with an antipsychotic to calm them down. The process of treating schizophrenia takes two phases, which include the acute whereby higher doses of medication are necessary to treat the psychotic symptoms and maintenance phase, which usually takes the entire life of the victim. In the maintenance phase, the dosage is usually reduced gradually to the required minimum in the prevention of future episodes as well as in controlling inter-episode symptoms (Fuller et al., 2015). However, if the symptoms of schizophrenia appear or becomes worse after the victim is given a lower dosage, it is recommended that the dosage is increased to help in the prevention of further relapse.
