Get Out Before Saturday Analysis

Stanley Donwood’s Get Out Before Saturday is a painting with several subtle symbols referencing, in my interpretation, a post-apocalyptic landscape. In this paper, I will be investigating and attempting to prove that Donwood’s inspiration for the piece stems from humankind’s deterioration of the planet through our ideological shortcomings in regards to both the environment, and global politics. Furthermore, I will be addressing my belief that Donwood intends to issue a warning through the painting through a modernist viewpoint.

Donwood is a visual artist based out of the UK, known for graphic design, drawing and painting. He reached success working closely alongside the band Radiohead throughout his career. He has been designing all of the

Her passage captures the very essence of Get Out Before Saturday, and perhaps Donwood’s overall artistic purpose. Through underlying themes he attempts to make meaningful connections with his audience about technological impacts on the natural world. As a preface to the core of this paper I feel it is important to acknowledge Winterson’s writing, as it synthesizes the necessity to dig for deeper meaning. In consuming modern art at face value, its messages and connections are lost:

When you say ‘This work has nothing to do with me'. When you say ‘This work is pointless… you might be right, because you are looking at a fad, or you might be wrong because the work falls so outside of the safety of your own experience that in order to keep your own world intact, you must deny the other world of the painting.

When viewing Get Out Before Saturday, one could simply admire it for its lush colours, or perhaps dismiss it altogether for its obscure style. Before passing judgement on a piece, however, it is imperative that the viewer does their due diligence in understanding its intentions.
