He begins with part of his history, part of his life; this, along with his descriptive and imaginative writing, is a clear beginning to a Descriptive Essay. This could easily lead the reader to the knowledge that this paper will be about an experience that the writer has had in the past. The post date of 1977 in the first sentence of the introduction further nudges this train of thought along. In his mentioning of Baltimore and the black people he sees all around him, he broaches, quite literally, half of his topic. Because he is telling more of a story than arguing a point or informing an audience, there is no clear thesis to this introduction. After reading Matthew’s introduction, readers may simply guess at the course this topic will progress along. They may guess that it will be about his life in Baltimore, or about the black people that live there. From simply reading this one paragraph, there is no clear path that the essay will
