A question was presented by Ronald Comer in Chapter 5, about a criminal with dissociative identity disorder and what is appropriate as a verdict if one of the other identities commits a crime, I think it would depend on the severity of the crime (2013). I have not actually heard a case of this happening. I do think that with the increase of recent cases of this disorder could be iatrogenic, meaning that the identities may have been produced by their health practitioners through suggestion. For example, there are investigators that believe that the individual’s own therapist might question the individual or even suggest the existence of other personalities. In turn, to please the therapist, the individual might think they have another personality…
There’s much you can learn through reading about different psychological disorders and concepts. The book “First Person Plural: My Life as a Multiple” by Cameron West specifically explains the life of Cameron West living with Dissociative Identity Disorder. I chose this book because of my uncertainty and intrigue about DID and the everyday struggles of multiples. Because this book is based on the actual accounts of Cameron West, I felt I got a better understanding of DID and could really get a feel for the thoughts and feelings of this man through his journey of dealing and coming to terms with his disorder. At the end of the book, I had gone through a whirlwind of emotions from sadness because of Cams past to have developed DID to utter joy that he learned how to accept it and lived a happier life.…
Introduction Evaluations in social work practices are needed to report the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of psychological intervention used in the field. The single subject research design (SSRD) is an empirical measurement of a client’s functioning over a time span. This SSRD tool will measure the client’s functioning before, during and after the intervention (Jordan & Franklin, 2011). This paper will describe the client, establish a baseline, track two targeted goals over 30 days and applied interventions, analyze the results of the study and address the studies limitations. Case summary Sharon is a 48-year-old Caucasian women.…
It is characterized by very frequent mood swings, and a chronic fear of abandonment. Like bipolar, those affected are unstable, impulsive, have anxiety, and often self harm.21 Dissociative Disorders All three of the different types of dissociative disorders are characterized by an involuntary escape from reality through a disconnection between thoughts, identity, consciousness, and memory. Dissociative amnesia is difficulty remembering information about one’s self. What is forgotten may surround a particular event, like 7 combat or abuse, or even information about identity and life history.…
There is an interesting expression in Asia called a “self-role-played idiot,” which is used to point some people who imagine themselves are in the animation or they are the protagonists in their own world. However, not every dissociative thinking is enjoyable, instead, people may experience the difficult situations that they have to dissociate themselves in order to overcome the painful memories. Martha Stout discussed two of her patients, in her article “When I Woke Up on Tuesday, it is Friday,” they have experienced the overwhelming pains than they can bear for, such as one for the patients is extremely fearful for her stepfather because she had been abused by him in her childhood. Stout also explained the definition of the dissociation,…
Schizophrenia and Dissociative Disorder are occasionally confused for one another, but are each different in their own ways. Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness involving chronic or repetitive psychotic outbreaks, characterized mainly by hearing or seeing things that aren't real, generally hallucinating and thinking or believing things are there when in reality they are not. Where as contrary to popular belief, most people tend to think that with schizophrenia come multiple personalities, which is just not the…
Throughout the film, Eve White visited Dr. Luther's office many times. Dr. Luther was more of a psychodynamic psychiatrist. His treatment for Eve White’s condition consisted of hypnotherapy and psychotherapy. These types of treatments are what is commonly used when treating patients with dissociative identity disorder (Heffner, 2001). Eve first went to the psychiatrist because she was experiencing severe headaches and blinding.…
Based on the video, the complexity behind Dissociative Identity Disorder was clearly addressed as individuals diagnosed with the disorder live a life with multiple identities that are fragmented by different characteristic personalities. I found the video to be highly emotional as the video addressed the great difficulty and stress experienced by individuals diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder on a daily basis affecting their work, school or home environment. Furthermore, the severity of the disorder is high as the individual seems to have no memory and are unaware of what their alter personality has done such as association with physical harm, stealing etc. In addition, the video highlighted aspects of what drives the development…
Many patients who are treated for DID also have had severe childhood trauma as well as have comorbid PTSD or comorbid borderline personality disorder. Dr. Richard P. Kluft, looks into a child’s perspective with dissociative identity disorder. He describes that as an effort to find how to preserve important relationships, such as the parent to child relationship, with positivity, hope, and safety, the child becomes overwhelmed and desperate. Thus, the child creates fantasies that he or she can turn to which then modify what their mind cannot accept. “An aspect of this adaptation is the development of alternate identities and selves that act in accordance with theses adaptive fantasies.”…
A controversy has surfaced in the psychology world about whether dissociative identity disorder is real or not. It is a controversial topic that is misunderstood by many people. A psychology professor at Towson University named Bethany Brand is an expert on DID. Severe childhood abuse as a child is associated with DID a lot and that leads to concern of memories that could be imaginary. Researchers fear that false memories may lead to the blame of innocent people.…
In this paper I will identify what dissociative identity disorder is, and evaluate a three peer-reviewed research studies in order to get better knowledge of dissociative disorder. Also, I will then conceptualize the disorder using the diathesis-stress model. The diathesis-stress model “views psychological disease as the result of the interaction between a person's predispositional vulnerability for a disorder and stress” (Ruddock, n.d.). Lastly, I will discuss current treatments that have shown to be the most effective for dissociative identity disorder.…
Part I: Applications of Classical Conditioning Treatment of Dissociative Identity Disorder The treatment of the dissociative identity disorder follows a consistent observance of psychological requirements. It is important to understand that therapists have the tendency to clearly understand the best practices regarding medication. Classical conditioning is one of the methods that can be used to ensure that dissociative identity disorder patients get their treatment. Dissociative identity disorder patients have the tendency to experience gaps in their memory Because the alters alternate in controlling the patient 's consciousness and behavior, the affected patient experiences long gaps in memory— gaps that far exceed typical episodes…

In the case study, Dr. Harpin, Paula’s psychologist, discovered and treated Paula’s case of DID throughout many sessions. Paula was a divorced mother of two children, who experienced amnesia in her everyday life.…
The main thing to draw from Aaron Stampler in the movie Primal Fear is that dissociative identity disorder is something that is in our society, but it can be faked to get around various failures or wrong doings in life. The symptoms of the disorder vary greatly from case to case as do the causes of the disorder, and the treatments for it are long and require the patient to put forth a lot more effort and commitment…
