He believes that he must follow his fate and God’s will for him no matter what is the situation. This made him even stronger to accept the fact that he is going to die. Crito argued that in the opinion of many people, both Socrates and his friends will be criticized if he does not make effort to escape. Socrates argues in defense by stating the danger that comes when following public opinion. He illustrates that the opinion of some should be considered and the opinion of others should be disregarded. Moreover, his escape would not benefit him, his friends or family, as it would cause them injury as a result. The ones who would have assisted him to escape would as a result be likely driven to exile, in which they could destroy their lives. As for him personally, departing to a neighboring city would be problematic as he would be recognized as an enemy and looked upon as a corrupter of the laws. Escaping from prison wont solve the issue, escape was never the solution for anyone. Once you escape you will spend your rest of your life escaping. Therefore, Crito believes that its not wrong for Socrates to escape because he has been imprisoned unjustly. However, Socrates does not agree with Crito, keeping his view of the obligation of fulfilling the terms of the sentence. Socrates believes that when the states interest disagrees with that of a person, a person should not object to the state's imposition of power upon him, even though that which is being imposed may be unjust.
