They aren’t allowed to choose their own “partner in crime.” The text states, “.... This represents the people in the community and how they don’t even experience love which has to do with happiness. Also, love is one of the highest ranks of happiness, so if they don’t have love, than they can’t experience real happiness because love is important for being joyful in life. Jonas, a kid in The Giver, has gotten the opportunity to know about the old world and what had happened to it. The other people in the community, though, don't get to experience true life because some of the key things in life have been taken away from them.
