Comparison Paper The novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry both explore the goals and struggles of achieving The American Dream. Both writings express overall themes and how different characters are affected by their dreams, and both challenge readers to new ideas and understandings.
John Steinbeck’s idea of the American dream is very similar to the American dream today. His idea of the American dream is to own your own place, be in charge of yourself, and have extra money to use on yourself. I know this is how he views the American dream because George says, “O.K. One of the characters in Of Mice and Men that don’t achieve the dream is Candy. Steinbeck describes Candy’s feeling about his future: “Now Candy spoke his greatest fear. ‘You an’ me can get that little place, can’t we, George? You an’ me can go there an’ live nice, can’t we, George? Can’t we?’” (Steinbeck 94). This quote shows that Candy will never, unfortunately, achieve his dream. Curley’s wife is another person that doesn’t achieve the dream. She explains to Lennie: “He says he was gonna put me in the movies. Says I was a natural. Soon’s he got back to Hollywood he was gonna write to me about it…I never got that letter” (Steinbeck 88). One of the people that accomplished the dream was Mama. Mama got a house, from the life insurance for her deceased husband, and a gardening hat from Travis. When Travis gives Mama the hat nobody but her, like it and she says, “What’s the matter with you all! This here is a beautiful hat! I always wanted me one just like it” (Hansberry 106)! Just as Mama achieved the dream Walter did not. Walter wanted to open a liquor store. “Yessss!
