Holden views how fake the people in his society are, and is disgusted by it. He wants to be able to live in a world where everyone is genuine and not “phony”. This fakeness by people is what drives his anger against society, and causes him to not want to be involved in society whatsoever. Holden has attempted to alienate himself from other humans. However, throughout the novel, we see how he wants to interact with other people and his desire for interaction is greater than ever before. He acts as if he is not lonely, but the reader can see how he truly wants interaction and to change society. She deals with a corrupt government who wants to brainwash the strong faction and use them as an extermination force against other factions. However, the brainwashing does not work on the divergent. But, Beatrice has to act as if it worked because if the government knows that she is divergent, they will murder her. She wants to escape the society though and lead a rebellion against the leaders. She wants to be able to live in a world where everyone is equal and allowed to live a life of fun and passion, not just work.
