What is the best technique to use when trying to get somebody to remember something? Allowing them to see it read it and say it to themselves? Maybe even call out words to them and ask them to picture it. The processing theory argues that deep processing leads to better long term memory than shallow processing.
Shallow processing takes two forms and they are structural and phonemic processing. Structural processing focuses more on how the letters look or the typeface of a word. Phonemic focuses more on how the word sounds. In all shallow processing is just when we hear something repeatedly and the repetition helps the brain hold onto the memory for short term. Deep processing involves …show more content…
The experimenter used five total questions, the first question asked was “Is there a word present?” Half had a word on the tachistoscope and half did not. Each question had its ow level to it in a sense of making you process the word in more than one way. The tests that were given were free recall for the reaction test meaning recall every word presented, and cue recall for the recognition test. The results of this experiment showed that when subjects were asked questions about the exterior form of the word responses came in faster. When subjects were asked questions about the words meaning answers took longer to come in. This concludes that deeper processing consent to extensive retention.
An experiment consisting of subjects being asked questions over the type script of casing the letters are in, questions that rhyme, and questions that are sentences missin one word. There were three trials of questions with twenty questions being asking. Ten of them were no no questions in each phase level. The questions were given auditorial towards the subject and it would also appear in the tachistoscope for two msec. This experiment results showed that the deep processing theory took longer to achieve on each level of questioning. ( Tulving 1975)
In both experiments the results show different encoding are connected with different feedback latencies.

The two factors used Acquisition Task and Congruency. Each of the individual subjects recived rhy, ming recognition test. Inquiries of the test raise concerns over rhyme-yes objects have an biased benefit over sematic-yes objects. In resulting of this all the subkects received a form of rhyming test. Once the experiment was done the expirimentors came to conclusion that it seems like rhyme-yes acquisition is better than sematic-yes acquisition. Experimentors came to conclusion that shallow processing is inferior to deep processing but due to different reasons. Basically when one wants to learn about something in particular then use the type processing neccissary for what is needed to be learned and it will benefit the subject. For example if one wants to learn about rhyming material then it would help if one paid close attention to the rhyming of the words. Experimentors would say it might be best to substitute “levels of processing” with “transfer appropriate processing” because one is using the approcpriate thought processing to gain information.
