Shades of Emotions In Kazou Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, the production of artificial human being’s questions what criteria a human being should meet and if artificially created beings, referred to as clones, should be considered human. The novel is an imagined dystopia where clones are produced and kept in a community where they will eventually be harvested for their organs to complete their life span. These clones are keep away from the real world and have no knowledge of the world beyond their community of Hailsham. Ruth selfishly keeps Tommy and Ruth from true love with each other throughout most of the story even though it was apparent they are truly in love in the description during their time at Hailsham. Another event occurred that made Kathy question the reality of right from wrong and ingenuity of another being was when she realized that Ruth lied to her about where she got her pencil case. This proved to Kathy even though they are taught to be good, bad events happen that people chose to do as this is a normal human thought. The description of events by the narrator presents these clones are capable of human emotion even though they are unknowingly experiencing such events. Romance, friendship, and sadness are presented in many events as Kathy does not realize she is going through these events. The reader is truly able to understand these beings are more human than the humans who are keeping them captive as they feel a genuine emotion and are denied these rights by cold humans who claim they are deserving of such emotions. This story presents the quest for love in a dystopian environment where clones overcome and grow out of a regulated lifestyle and even though they unknowingly experience different shades of emotions, they are truly human as they can experience these emotions even though the origins deny their access or
