Sexual Assault is a serious issue that continues to persist in America. Did you know that about every 107 seconds a person is sexually assaulted in this country, which accumulates to be about 293,000 people sexually assaulted each year (RAINN, 2009). According to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (2009), each year 1 out of 6 women are victims of attempted or completed sexual violence, about 3 percent are men, and 15 percent are children under the age of 12. These statistics are scary when examining them first hand, but what is sexual assault specifically? This phrase is a very broad topic that encompases any non-mutual, non-concensual sexual contact (Ashmore, 2015). This includes, stranger sexual assault, serial rape, gang rape, marital rape, same sex sexual assault, date rape, alcohol and drug facilitated sexual assault, sexual harassment, peepers, flashers, obscene phone calls, child pornography, adult pornograhy, suvival sex, sex trafficking, and prostution. (CALCASA, 2011) Going through this experience can be very traumatic and when these victims are not treated, it can lead to devastating outcomes. According to Chen, Murad, Paras, and et al (2010) victims can be diagnosed with lifetime anxiety, depression, eating disorder, PTSD, sleep disorders, and suicidal ideologies. This is the reason for there to be a need for sexual assault counselors. They are here to aid the victims with their mental and emotional problems after the crime. This paper will examine the…
