Edgar Allan Poe establishes an ominous mood through the setting and word choice in his narrative poem, “The Raven”. From the start of the poem the setting establishes the ominous mood. “The Raven” takes place in December at 12am on a dreary night in the speaker's bedroom, in which he calls it the “chamber”.When people think of December they think of holidays and happiness, all the speaker thinks of is grief, since the death of his lovely wife Lenore. The word choice that was chosen also has an effect on the ominous mood because when the speaker is frantically running around to see where the mysterious noise was coming from, all of the words were describing the sound and the speaker’s fear. All of these words combined makes the speaker so distraught and applies to the ominous mood in so many ways because they are describing the surroundings and the fear. The speaker At the end of this narrative the speaker decides, to ask the raven questions and he expects it to say nothing back. But all it says is “Nevermore”. What the raven is trying to tell The speaker is that he will never see Lenore again, no matter how long he holds the grief for. The setting and the author's diction had an a huge impact on this narrative. Just knowing that this story takes place in the middle of the night makes you infer that it’s a dark narrative. While the word choice in “The Raven”, deeply contributes to what is happening and it helps us understand the story better by creating images in our minds.Without the word choice and the setting this narrative wouldn’t be the same, and it would be hard for people to comprehend the ominous mood that is occurring throughout it .
