Gary Ross’s film known as Seabiscuit took place during the late 1920s; during the movie historical background was given as the film progressed. The main protagonists are shown throughout the film and you are able to see how they were personally affected. We will see the changes and struggles each character faces and how 2nd chances can make a difference.
Innovation is a form of change/transformation. This is exactly what occurred during the late 1920s; it was the beginning of many factory working jobs. Many businesses adopted the technique of using assembly lines, and thus helped many Americans find jobs it was an economic boom. Thousands of American lost their jobs and homes. This was known as the Great Depression; people were living in the streets all across America. These were hard times everyone was going through something. In Seabiscuit each protagonist went through their fair share of hard times whether it be a cause from the great depression or just a rough patch in their life. Howard went through his own personal Great Depression. As a business owner in the automobile industry he was told he must lay off workers because of how the economy was, but Howard refused to layoff anymore worker and told his fellow associate, “l’m not gonna do it. No more layoffs. Well, it can't get any worse.” He couldn’t be responsible for the unemployment of any more people. His lowest point came when he lost his son in a car accident. The loss of his child was too much to bare for his wife, so she left him. Charles did not lose in the way others did no matter, he did lose a piece of his life. After all that has happened to him Howard chooses to invest in horse racing where he comes across new friends. As for Red, he lost in many ways. During when the Great Depression first hit; like mentioned before his family and he lost everything, and like thousands of other people they lived in the streets. However, this was but one of Reds lowest points. His father and mother abandoned him with a stranger so that he could race for him. After spending most of his time
