When it comes to the topic of public college tuition being free, a little more than half of us would readily agree that it should be free. According to Finance Online by Chang J. 52% of all U.S. citizens believe in free public college tuition. Personally, I believe that public college tuition should be free because it connects directly to my personal core values of fairness, opportunity, and innovation. In ProCon.org’s view, “Students from low- and moderate-income families are unable to afford as many as 95% of American colleges” (ProCon.org). This specifically targets students who are of lower income or are underrepresented when it comes to college. According to PublicCollege.com, only 12% of lower income students earned a four year degree by the age of 25 compared to the 75% of higher income students achieving a four year degree by 25. If public college tuition were to be free, it would present a value of opportunity as well as fairness to these lower income students and would increase the number of students who achieve a four year degree as well as possibly decrease the dropout rate for students.
