Native Americans use legends to help their tribe. Dating back to ancient civilizations, people passed down legends so that future generations would know the past and avoid future dangers. Passing legends from generation to generation was the Native American’s “primary form of wisdom.” (Legends and Stories) Many of the legends pertaining to wisdom were passed on by animal masters. An animal master believes he is above all things and dominates everything the natural world has to offer. This belief was the basis of their culture and their legends. According to North Carolina Native American Legends and Folklore, the Native Americans had to go to unknown land to gather food and hunt. (Native) These journeys could be a choice of life or death. During these hard times, the Native Americans began to search for answers. Eventually they came to rely on the telling of legends to explain these unforeseen circumstances. Later on these journeys to unknown lands became journeys to unknown realms. They would explore these realms to find answers and then transform their journey into a story that would later become a legend.
