A number of deaths and events caused a law that aimed to keep alcohol influenced violence off the streets. After the tragic deaths of teenage boys caused by a punches from an intoxicated teenage boy, law reform arose. These two boys; Thomas Kelly and Daniel Christie lost their lives whilst innocently out with their friends and then it ending after drunk teenagers threw a punch at them. Society was outraged at the death of their beloved teenagers, which resulted in a law reform known as ‘One punch law’. One punch law refers to assault causing death. Barry O’ Farrell implemented a new laws on 21st January 2014 known as the lock out laws. These laws state that there is a 1:30 am lockout for all those who plan to go out and get drunk. This law was implemented with the objective to decrease acts of violence when under the influence of alcohol. A study was done last June which showed the progress that the country had undertaken, with a decrease of 59.2% in assaults between 6pm and 1:30am as well as a 93.9% decrees in assaults between 3am and 6am. These results were shocking to Australian society and proved that the lock out laws are working.
However in areas in which the lock out law do not apply such as Newtown, Bondi and Double Bay, crime rate has increased as the ‘party goers’ have migrated to a different area for night life. Giving business’s more sales and therefore the demographic of assaults has changed. Although King’s Cross still has a nightlife, due to the lock out laws the statistics show the number of people travelling to Kings cross has decreased and even though the violent assault in kings Cross has decreased other areas violent assault levels has increased
