On October 3rd, 1995, people across the United States gathered in front of the television awaiting the verdict on the O.J. Simpson murder trial. Many people around the world claim this to be the trial of the century. Simpson was a legend in the football world, having held the world record for the single-season yards-per-game average. On June 12, 1994 Nicole Brown Simpson, ex-wife of former NFL star OJ Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman were found stabbed to death outside of Nicole Brown Simpson's house. Simpson became the main suspect in the murder as blood and a glove similar to one found at the scene was found at Simpson's property. Simpson fled from law enforcement in his white Ford Bronco, in a low-speed police chase. The chase had started after Simpson had been charged with the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. Simpson was supposed to surrender to the police by 11am, but he never showed up. The chase was broadcast on live television, where over 95 million people tuned in to view the deterioration of a famed football star. It was such a surreal event to watch play out for many Americans, because of that the media went into a frenzy. They were reporting on the chase as much as they could, even going as far as to interrupt the 1994 NBA finals. The chase itself became a media circus with news helicopters following from above for continuous coverage. It turned the whole thing into a spectacle. “‘What I realized is, this is entertainment,” said Gerald Uelmen, one of Simpson’s defense attorneys. “This is not news.’” (Babb).
