Murdering Love

Robert Browning wrote the two poems, "My Last Duchess" and "Porphyria 's Lover” both poems convey a thoughtful concept of love. These two poems by Browning’s are set in 18th century. Both poems describe the behavior of people who are in loving, romantic relationships. Robert Browning tells each poetic story through a single speaker. These poems reveal an relation in which the admirer kills the object of his love. This essay will compare and contrast the characteristics, imagery and the structure of the poem. It will also discuss the theme love found in "My Last Duchess" and "Porphyria 's Lover” and murdering that love in the end.

In “Porphyria 's lover” the repetition of words like “rain” and “night” in the poem give the read an image of a dark rainy night and perfect chaos image for a murder to take place. Although this imagery sounds like a story of a traditional movie, the psychology behind it is very disturbing in this poem, as the murder is done not out of hate but out of love. However, once Porphyria enters, the poem moves to a more sexual place and the imagery as she undresses and dries herself that suddenly changes those natural forces with the human forces of sexuality. The similarity in two poems is that both murderers make the readers believe that their victims are still alive by propping them up or depicting them in a canvas, forcing the beloved into submission. However, Porphyria 's lover is an abnormal man who does not realize the repercussions of his act. He also conducts it without much afterthought. The Duke however is much more suave and composed. He kills the duchess in a cold-blooded manner and he talk with pride about how he preserves his lady’s love.

"My Last Duchess" and "Porphyria 's Lover” in both poems each uses rhyming scheme. “My last Duchess” uses Iambic Pentameter Couplets and makes it more like the Romantic lyrics. In “Porphyria 's lover” Poet uses Iambic Tetrameter and the rhyme is regular, but it 's asymmetrical. The poem “Porphyria’s lover” is written from the point of view of a psychotic killer, which puts the reader in the uncomfortable position.
