In Mad, Solange addresses in her own way, many hurdles that Black women go through in life, which do warrant Black women to be angry, sad etc. Holding such emotions and expressing them is valid, regardless if some nonblack people and Black men think so. Lyrics like "you got the right to be mad but when you carry it alone, you find it only getting in the way", and the song within its entirety tackle the angry Black woman narrative. Solange makes it known that yes Black women can be angry, but they are vulnerable and need to heal. Understanding that Black women can be strong and weak, and not ignoring the historical context behind Black women angry in society (and their other emotions), is key to shattering stereotypes and acquiring growth. In a similar fashion, Solange talks about depression in Cranes in the Sky. While doings many thing trying to get through pain, she realizes such distractions like partying, getting drunk, being materialistic, and having sex to fix internal issues don 't work. Ultimately one must work on themselves to get to a more stable mental health, self-loving status, and such action mirrors with hold people feel about themselves on the inside. Lastly Solange 's Weary record really connects with Dubois 's sorrow songs section, because as he started each chapter off in The Souls of Black Folk with lyrics from a Negro song, he also notes specifically in Sorrow Songs, that in old days people sung sorrow songs, (even in the dark and while they were feeling down) because they were weary at heart. During those days and even today, Black people have much to be tired and angry about in this world. Solange likewise starts her song off by saying she 's weary of the world and tells listeners to be weary of the world too, because much is wrong with the world and it 's worth it to critically analyze it.
